“Tonight” was written around and demoed in mid-2012 when Jack and Dan joined the band, originally using a strong FM bass patch mimicking those heard in the soundtracks from games on the Sega Mega Drive system, and with a very percussive synthesiser intro. The song eventually evolved to the state it's in now, with the same lyrics but entirely new melodies, with a lot of practice and rewritting of the instrumental parts. There was originally a lot more guitar and keyboard parts in the song, but it was stripped back to give more room for the vocals to breathe, with the drums and bass carrying the entire song. The synthesiser riff stemmed from an older piano instrumental, that was originally a lot faster and jauntier, but digging it out from the Flying Batteries harddrive of old demos, midis, etc, let us rethink it, and throwing a new progression underneath it to tie it together. The lyrics of the song were pretty much unchanged from their first draft, and were written in early 2012 when I became very fed up with and felt tied down to where I live, something that I've since come to terms with. The production itself was relatively straight forward, and probably the easiest song to mix, and was where I first tried out the vocal mixing and FX for the album, giving the vocals more punch and body than in the previous FB album.

This time all I really want is to leave this place behind
Forget that picture on my wall leave this place and forget it all
Tied to the roots that hold me
Just a crooked branch for all to see
Forget this place and start again
Reborn and break these chains
Just for tonight
Forget who is wrong and right
If you can't lose
Maybe I can't win
Why do we fight?
I don't care who is wrong and right
If you can't lose
Maybe I can't win
How can I tell my friends I'm leaving behind this planet tonight
Forgotten who I am just a light we're waiting to flicker and die
So I carry on
Never happy or sad enough
To do something about this feeling
I am lost and I am kneeling
