“Faded Smiles” (working title Far Underground Creatures Kill) is another old song, dating back to 2009 when we used to go by the name Cold Haze, playing briefly as a trio, and then as a duo. It kinda worked its way back in to the rotation in 2014. The song was another one recorded in the initial session, with the bass and drums forming the core of the song with 2 guitars layered over the mix. The 2 guitars, played by Rikki and Dan, were extremely contrasting, which we felt actually aided the harshness of the song, although a bit of playful detuning during the main riff helped give it a bit of an edge to the instrumental sessions. The song was one that has remained more or less the same instrumentally since its conception, although Jack gave new life to the drums and percussion, and the wild synth patch Craig used here dates back to its first run when we used to play it live. The outro with the synth swelling was originally a good 20 seconds longer, but on repeated listens it really became physically nauseating, and we didn't want to put people off playing on its own, as it becomes very ear splitting...we'll probably keep it live, though, in small doses we find it hilarious. The lyrics were completely rewritten from its original demo version, to something more fitting with the albums theme's – loss and personal grievance.
lyrics
I will remember you the way that others do
Not in a bed or a chair but so full of life
So please forgive me if I just can't see you
On your last days not as a patient but a wife
He's such a brave boy so full of joy
The front is cracking he knows what's happening
He won't remember you the way that others do
He's in too close now he can't forget what he's seen
It just feels like you've been away for a while
If I close my eyes I still see your glowing smile
I won't forget you but I can't see you
As a patient and person that I'm here to help
I will remember you the way that others do
A wife, a mother, a sister, and a person to love
It just feels like you've been away for a while
If I close my eyes I still see your glowing smile
Far underground
Far underground
Far underground
They are waiting
They are waiting for us
