about

“No Love” (work in progress title “Dancey Thing”) was an older song we started working on around 2011, which was originally released through a split EP with our friend mattir , an experimental IDM artist/film maker. The song never really sounded like it was finished, it just kind of trailed off, so we stopped playing it live and begun to look at rewriting it. A different bass line and a new outro was all it took and the rest basically wrote itself. The recording itself was great, but mixing it proved to be pretty difficult, hats off to Joe at Unity Recording Studio for basically taming the drums and bass, letting us work the rest of the song around it with a solid core. Recording was pretty miraculous because we recorded drums and bass isolated, and when the outro section came out, we had to basically jam to memory, where Jack was playing to what I was doing on the bass and I was playing to what Jack was doing on the drums, for an indeterminate amount of time until it “felt right”...somehow it synced up to the synth we had programmed for it, absolutely perfectly. Talk about luck.
The song has probably the most guitar overdubs on the album, sitting at 5 tracks, although they're all a little buried and are more complimentary rather than in your face, and it was also the first song to get vocals. The hook, heard at the chorus, is a number of autotuned vocal samples, guitar samples, synths and vocoders all mixed together in to a single WAV file, and actually took a lot longer to mix than the rest of the track, way back in late 2013. It took so long, in fact, that when our hard drive crashed earlier in the year, I had to get in touch with Parker Vogt, who mastered the album, to see if he had the wav stem for it, rather than recreating the thing. Luckily he did! The lyrics, completely unchanged from their first draft, were written hastily on a scrap of paper in 2010, and are about writing off someone from your life. I think everyone gets to a point where they just have to look at a person and think “You know what, you're just not worth the time I'm giving you”, and getting to that point is hard, but often worthwhile for your own well being.

lyrics

What are you looking for?
A place to stay? A bed to play?
A lap to rest your head
Where do you think you are?
A sight to see? A fantasy?
A twisted scene rewritten
You won't find it here
I won't forgive you this time

This house is not your home
There's no love for you inside these walls
This heart is not your home
It's muscles won't let you in

Have I come to far?
Have I made a mistake?
I have made these promises
And they're mine alone to break

This house is not your home
There's no love for you inside these walls
This heart is not your home
It's muscles won't let you in

Won't let you in
Won't let you win
Can't let you in
I won't let you win
