about

“No Voice” (work in progress name “Mega Eff”) first started out when Dav (Daniel Boles) played a riff and progression over the PA at a practice in like 2012 or something. Originally, it was pretty damn funky with some sweet digital bass, sweeping pads and stuff, that kinda stuff, but there was this one bit where it just broke down and this riff came out of nowhere, that always really stuck with me. If I'm remembering correctly, we first started developing it proper in late 2013, maybe early 2014, where it had really crazy tribal toms and wah-wah guitar. We opted for a more restrained approach, building the song up slowly, and one of the reasons it opens the album is because it's a different beast to anything we've done before. We recorded most of the bass and drums for the album in a single session, and “Mega Eff” was one of the first recorded after we got the drum and bass sound sorted for the album, basically a recording test. A lot of the lyrics are inspired by a documentary video on dealing with Alzheimers patients, comparing the difficulty of communicating and bringing together their thoughts with a fog descending over their life, where the only way out is to walk through fog until you find solid ground, something that's always sounded absolutely heartbreaking to me. The title, “No Voice” comes from the belief that the first thing you forget about a person when they're gone is how their voice sounds, something that's certainly proved true in my experience.

lyrics

I'm trying to reach you
I'm trying to reach you
Through fog and cloudy waters
I'm trying to reach you
I've lost you twice before
Now I'm losing you once again
Forgetting everything that you are
But never what you meant to me

And the feelings blur
'til they seem like a dream
And your memories corrode
They bleed as it grows

I'm trying to reach you
I'm trying to reach you

This disease will spread
And take all of you I have left
This disease will spread
Until there's nothing of you left
This disease will spread
And take all of you I have left
Still this disease will spread

And all I want to do
Is spend another day with you
Another day with you
Any day will do
I see you from up close
But yet you seem so far away
I had so much left to ask
And you had so much left to say
There's no voice
No voice
There's nothing left of you at all
There's no voice
No voice

And I want to do
Is spend another day with you
Another day with you
Any day will do
I see you from up close
But yet you seem so far away
I had so much left to ask and to say
There's no voice
No voice
You're losing everything you are
No voice
No voice
